The Basics
Church Affiliation:
North American Lutheran Church (NALC) — Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Mission District
Pastor: Mark & Marcia Sabin
Ascension is Founded

The Church Is Born
The date is December 7, 1869. Martinus and Bertha Anderson are busily preparing for guests — for today is a truly big day at their
log home in Shawano County. Reverend Homme is coming all the way from Winchester to conduct a worship service for this small group of Norwegian settlers who are so hunger for the Word of God. So began the first flicker of hope for the birth of a Lutheran Church in our community. Since the early 1800's many people from Norway had been coming into Shawano County. Some had originally settled in Winchester, but later pulled up stakes and headed north to the Towns of Maine, Navarino, Waukechon, and Lessor.
Today:
Modern Influences, Traditional Heart
Today, Ascension is a combination of old-meets-new. We host contemporary services incorporating hymns and Lutheran traditions every Sunday, with a contemporary Praise with Passion on Sunday evenings. The building has also received update, with solar panels allowing us to stay green and be more economical. The church youth are a focus, with events held for the young people of the church that emphasize fun — like bowling or arena football games — or fundraising for mission trips. Each summer, the church hosts the community's Vacation Bible School in partnership with other area churches as well. Past trips have been taken to New Mexico and South Dakota, creating a relationship with Next Step Ministries as well as with the people we've served. We also focus on serving our own community, with community dinners and the hosting of the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry in our own building.
